How Sound Stream works

Four steps to playing your own audio on Alexa. No technical skills needed.

1

Enable the skill

Search "Sound Stream" in the Alexa app or find it on Amazon. Enable it for free.

2

Link Dropbox

Connect your Dropbox account. A free Dropbox plan works. The folder Apps › SoundStream is created automatically.

3

Create folders

Each folder becomes a voice-activated playlist. Name them simply: "Jazz", "Audiobooks", "Sleep Sounds".

4

Start listening

Say "Alexa, open Sound Stream" to sync, then "Alexa, play Jazz from Sound Stream".

Everything you need to enjoy your own audio

Sound Stream works with all major audio formats and gives you full voice control over your collection.

Built with the blind community

Sound Stream has become a vital tool for blind and visually impaired users — giving them independent, voice-controlled access to their own audiobook collections.

  • Play any audiobook by voice

Full voice navigation of your entire collection — browse, select, and play without a screen

  • Navigate between audiobooks

Skip from one audiobook to the next — feature built from direct feedback by a blind user

  • Works with any audiobook source

Not limited to Audible — use Libro.fm, Downpour, Librivox, RNIB, CD rips, any DRM-free audio

  • Skip, rewind, identify what's playing

Complete chapter control plus "what's playing?" identification — all hands-free

  • Complete independence after setup

Initial Dropbox upload may need sighted help — but then the listener has full control

★★★★★
"Finally, something that allows my Alexa device to select and play by voice control my audiobooks, not just audiobooks bought from Audible. This allows a blind person to navigate their audiobook collection as easily as with the Audible or RNIB skills. The blind person still needs help getting their audiobooks uploaded to Dropbox, but thereafter Sound Stream gives them the freedom to listen to what they want, when they want it, without needing further help."
— Amazon review, United Kingdom, August 2025

Blind and visually impaired users in the US, UK, and Germany have shared that Sound Stream makes a real difference in their daily independence. Multiple accessibility features have been built directly from their feedback — often within days of a suggestion.

Frequently asked questions

Sound Stream supports all formats that Echo devices can play: MP3, FLAC, M4A, AAC, OGG, WAV, and M3U (for internet radio streams). WMA is not supported — this is an Echo hardware limitation.
No. The free Dropbox plan (2 GB) works fine. Make sure your Dropbox email address is verified. If you have a large collection, you may want more Dropbox storage, but that's between you and Dropbox.
Unlimited. Every Echo device in your home can use Sound Stream, and they can all be linked to the same Dropbox account — or different accounts if different family members want their own libraries.
Amazon doesn't officially support third-party skills with speaker groups. However, with Sound Stream Premium and Alexa Routines, you can play across multiple Echo devices simultaneously — achieving multi-room playback.
Sound Stream uses cloud servers (AWS) that run continuously to process your audio requests. The subscription covers these ongoing server costs. Without it, the skill couldn't exist. The free tier is fully functional for smaller collections.
Sound Stream is available on Amazon in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Spain, and Australia/New Zealand.
Use simple, short names — one or two words work best. Avoid special characters like dashes, underscores, and ampersands. For example, "Take On Me.mp3" works better than "01-A-Ha-Take_On_Me.mp3". You can also try spelling out words: say "R E L A X" to find a playlist named "Relax".
